Statement of Intent

Concerns about the climate are not unique to our time; they have shaped history. While painters have been privileged observers of these phenomena, musicians have also depicted the seasons and their effects, as well as grape harvests, grain harvests, and village festivals… Moreover, extreme cold, heat, storms, and fierce winds have inspired composers to create vocal and orchestral works that remain famous to this day!

The works in this program span from the 16th century—the Renaissance—to the 18th century—the Baroque era, a period included in what climate historians call the Little Ice Age (approximately 1300 to 1860). This was a time when human activity did not yet have the impact we now know it has on the climate and on living things…

“Lead us to pleasures in distant climes”: these lines from Rameau’s Indes galantes will take us far away, across time and continents. Expect variations and contrasts—both climatic and musical!

This program was created as a trio for the Itinéraire Baroque Festival in the Périgord Vert and for the European Day of Early Music in March 2025.
